Last year my daughter hurt her knee during volleyball practice. The unfortunate happened. Because she is a school athlete, we purchased the school accident insurance thinking that it was the prudent thing to do. We took her to the urgency care center in Prescott Valley, AZ and they x-rayed her knee. The results came back with no broken bones but the doctor said that she should have a MRI done. We followed the doctors orders. The MRI showed a torn ACL in her knee. I consulted a doctor on this in Cottonwood, AZ and he said that surgury should be something that my wife and I should consider because our daughter is a practicing athlete and it would be better for her as she gets order. We scheduled the surgury which lasted 2 hours at a hospital in Cottonwood, AZ. It was considered by the hospital as outpatient surgury. The doctor sent my daughter to physical therapy for 3 to 4 months and during this time the medical bills started to rolling in. I can remember thinking that it was a wise thing for me and my wife in purchasing the school insurance because the billing was so extensive. Looking over the bills as they came, I notice that the bills were covered adequately and what my wife and I could afford, we paid the patient's amount and was very thankful to have the coverage for my daughter. All but two bills we were able to afford and not sink financially. The MRI bill, after we checked the policy dec page given to us by the school, we strongly believe was underpaid. We contacted the insurance and all they could say by letter was that they were investigating it. Two months have passed by, no answer. In the meantime, the hospital that did the MRI have forwarded the bill to a collection agency down in Phoenix, AZ. The collection agency have since treated us like we are criminals and after explaining the situation to them, they said that the bill was our responsiblity and our difference with the insurance company was not their concern. They told me that I would have to pay and take up my differences with them. They have already marred our credit and the man on the telephone from the collection agency has recently called me to remind me of what they have already done and that they were going to take the next step in bringing a judgement against us. My wife and I are shocked. At 52 years old and able to have the flexibility to purchase anything that we ever needed because of our hard work and living as law abiding citizens of this country, our reputation in the financial world is damaged all because my daughter unfortunately was injured at volleyball practice in school and we thought we did the right thing to purchase the school's accidental insurance policy. Our final shock through this ordeal is the hospital bill that they are requiring us to pay. The insurance paid only $1300 of the bill sticking us with $21,000. We don't have that kind of money. We purchased the school insurance for that purposed. Since then that bill has gone to a collection agency and I have told them our story. They call every other day. When I answer the telephone call I can only tell them my story but they sympathize and the calls continue. We don't know what to do. I'm currently seeking answers to our difficulty. There must be someone that can help us. It concerns us to know that living in this beautiful country for as long as we have and been tax paying citizens without a single defraction in paying our taxes, this has happened and we are not adequately taken care of.
